Housing Foundation completes grant program; aids 828 families with $800,000
The NC REALTORS® Housing Foundation is pleased to announce the completion of our grant application program for those impacted by the Hurricane Florence storm system in Eastern North Carolina. Eligible applicants could qualify for a grant covering one month’s rent or mortgage payment. Grants were available for up to $1,500 and did not need to be repaid.
Over the course of six months, the NC REALTORS® Housing Foundation awarded $800,000 to 828 families in 20 N.C. counties. Onslow and New Hanover Counties received the most grants. Craven, Pender, Brunswick, Carteret and Robeson Counties accounted for the next highest totals. Cities like Jacksonville, Wilmington, Lumberton and New Bern and communities like Hampstead were hardest hit.
Over 1,600 applications were received in the six weeks immediately following the release of the application in late September.
This grant was available through the generosity of the REALTOR® Relief Foundation, a natural disaster fund managed by the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR). NAR committed $500,000 to this effort.
The NC REALTORS® Housing Foundation committed $300,000. One hundred percent of all proceeds from this fund went to benefit disaster victims.
One of the missions of the NC REALTORS® Housing Foundation is to provide disaster relief within North Carolina for victims of natural disasters like hurricanes and tornadoes.
So many NC residents were dramatically affected by Hurricane Florence. The damage may be unprecedented in our state’s history. Staff and volunteers worked as rapidly and efficiently as possible to make sure these funds were administered effectively and appropriately.
We appreciate the generosity of REALTORS® throughout our state, as well as our numerous volunteers, who contributed to this important work.
